My, what a fabulous writer! Her theme of apples throughout her book, Five Thousand Days Like This One, made me want to read Pollan's section on apples all over again. And we'd like to put in another small orchard or some more Asian pears. Thanks for a great blog, and yes, if Obama asks, I will be more than happy to work alongside Michael and others in building vegetable gardens at the White House. Who needs a rose garden when you can grow your own food? Or why not have both -- think of the possibilities!Bee's Wing Farmhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14448829149661956171noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12340286.post-73318452144127229972008-11-30T16:01:00.000-05:002008-11-30T16:01:00.000-05:00Hi Catherine:Thanks for your post. It's a lot of fun to watch things grow, and we've been surprised how much food we could grow from our small beds. I'm so tempted to expand our garden this next summer.

I liked Terri's ideas above about planting fruit trees and also expanding my efforts with container gardening. I would love to grow blackberries. Yum!

I've read your blog for a couple of months now, and really enjoy it.

ChristineAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12340286.post-71498868145999326342008-11-30T15:10:00.000-05:002008-11-30T15:10:00.000-05:00Hi Terri,Thanks so much. It is designed for small plot farming. (In fact, I would love to blog about it one day because the graphics are also great).

I agree--there is something deeply satisfying, and nourishing, for the soul and body and peace of mind to see a full pantry with things you have "put up" from your own hard work. I think how self-sufficient we all used to be as a nation and we can be again--we just have to start in our own backyards or vacant lots.

Blessings to you,

CatherineCatherinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11361090241108323002noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-12340286.post-92173709590463878532008-11-30T07:57:00.000-05:002008-11-30T07:57:00.000-05:00May I just say that I agree 1000%with your suggest...May I just say that I agree 1000%
with your suggestions today.

We live in a suburban home now, so the huge farm garden we had when we lived in the country is not possible, but I have taken some of the front yard and made it a garden where vegetables and flowers mingle.

I put in raspberry canes and rhubarb along the fence last year and have already ordered a peach tree, an Asian pear and blackberry canes for next spring. I've also prepared an aspargus bed and hung boxes on the pool fence for strawberries!

Gardening is not only an economical way to feed your family fresh, organic produce, but it's relaxing and the feeling of contentment I get when I step back and look at the pantry shelves full of canning jars filled with delicious food that will keep us fed all winter, is just indescribable!
Thanks for the interesting piece.
God bless!Terrihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12321940139445511422noreply@blogger.com
